NanoFex Technology Utilizes Crawfish Shells And Sugar Can To Clean Groundwater

Most major construction projects require an environmental assessment. Using Geoprobe machinery, companies like Walker-Hill Environmental drill deep into the earth, pound in a sample tube and pull out layers of soil. Then it’s up to someone like NanoFex’s David Culpepper to analyze it. He’s looking for “changes in soil type and geology, presence of contamination such as gasoline or diesel, hydrocarbons.” Find out more here.

Idea Village, a New Orleans-based not-for-profit that helps support local entrepreneurs, is helping rebuild its city’s economic devastation by organizing a series of workshops and competitions involving MBA students from the nation’s top business schools. As part of New Orleans Entrepreneur Week (NOEW), the Greater New Orleans Foundation financed NOEW’s $50,000 “Water Challenge,” a competition for entrepreneurs with innovative water management solutions. The winner: NanoFex, which developed technology to use Louisiana sugar cane and crawfish shells to purify contaminated groundwater. Find out more here.

New Orleans Entrepreneur Week‘s inaugural Water Challenge 2011 culminated yesterday with the bestowment of $50,000 and business development support to NanoFex, a high-tech company based in the New Orleans area that will use new, local technology to make the country’s groundwater cleaner. NanoFex was one of three finalists who pitched their business plans to a panel of judges, which included entrepreneurs and leaders in business and environmental affairs. Find out more here.
